Your solar quote checklist

The line items worth checking before you feel ready to say yes.

A solar quote should be specific. If it is vague on any of these points, ask for clarification before proceeding.

System specification

✓ Total system size in kWp. ✓ Number of panels and individual wattage. ✓ Panel make and exact model number. ✓ Inverter make, model and type (string / microinverter / optimiser). ✓ Whether the inverter is battery-ready. ✓ Mounting system make and type.

Generation estimate

✓ Estimated annual generation in kWh. ✓ Specific yield assumed (kWh/kWp). ✓ Roof direction and tilt used in the estimate. ✓ Shading assumptions. ✓ Whether the estimate is based on PVGIS or another tool.

Price and what is included

✓ Total price including VAT. ✓ Confirmation that scaffolding is or is not included. ✓ Any electrical remediation or upgrade work noted. ✓ DNO application and registration. ✓ MCS certificate (required for Smart Export Guarantee access). ✓ Monitoring hardware and app setup.

Warranties and aftercare

✓ Panel product warranty duration. ✓ Panel performance warranty and minimum output at year 25. ✓ Inverter warranty duration. ✓ Installation workmanship warranty. ✓ Contact details and process for post-installation support.

Key takeaways

  • A complete quote should specify the exact panel model — not just a brand or range.
  • The generation estimate should state the assumptions used, not just the headline kWh figure.
  • Scaffolding and electrical work are frequently quoted separately — always ask.
  • An MCS certificate is required to register for the Smart Export Guarantee.
